Updated: Feb 13

Colorful colonial architecture along a quiet street in Cartagena’s Walled City, featuring pastel-colored buildings, balconies, and lanterns under a bright blue sky.
Strolling through the vibrant streets of Cartagena’s Walled City, where pastel-coloured colonial buildings and historic architecture capture the charm of this Colombian gem.

Sun-drenched streets, rustic decor, colourful Spanish architecture - Cartagena painted a picture of historical elegance intertwined with a vibrant, cultural life.

It wasn’t just the architecture that caught my eye but also the locals, particularly women, dancing freely to the salsa beat in their bright beautiful colourful dresses.

This fusion of culture and colour has deeply influenced my design style, sparking that love for old world architectural elements. While exploring the Walled City, I discovered many decorative shops showcasing natural rattan in fashion and home decor. The shopping experience here is perfect for anyone looking to add a touch of Cartagena to their life.

Shopping in the Walled City

CHIQUI HOUSE BOUTIQUE

Located in the historic heart of Cartagena, Casa Chiqui is much more than just a home decor store—it’s an immersive experience in global craftsmanship. Founded by Chiqui de Echaverría, the boutique offers an eclectic mix of treasures sourced from around the world, including jewelry, accessories, and, of course, stunning decor pieces. Whether you're browsing for unique statement earrings or searching for the perfect accent piece for your home, Casa Chiqui has something to inspire every style.

The decor selection is truly exceptional, blending elegance with tropical sophistication in a way that feels right at home in Cartagena’s vibrant culture. Each piece tells its own story, crafted by artisans from places as far as Indonesia, Morocco, India, and Mexico. Casa Chiqui is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates the artistry of handmade designs—whether for personal adornment or to elevate a living space.

CASA MUSEO LA PRESENTACION

As we roamed the streets of Cartagena, we stumbled upon Casa Museo La Presentación. Though Casa Museo La Presentación is now closed, I loved the local art, architecture, and the lush courtyard. It’s a reminder that places change, so we should cherish them while we can.

Where to Stay

ANANDA BOUTIQUE HOTEL

A Romantic Retreat in the Heart of the Walled City

Featured among the top hotels in Architectural Digest’s list for the Walled City

Right in the heart of the Walled City, Ananda Boutique Hotel gave us the perfect romantic escape, blending history and design in the best way. This beautifully restored 16th-century colonial hotel had so much character... every detail was a mix of colour, comfort, and charm. Walking up those cobblestone streets to the massive, hand-crafted doors felt so enchanting, like we were stepping into a little piece of Cartagena’s magic.

Each morning started with a refreshing swim in the rooftop pool, surrounded by 360-degree views of Cartagena’s city and ocean...honestly, the best way to kick off the day! Afterward, we’d chill on the lounging beds, get lost in a book, and just soak in the peaceful vibes. The breezy white drapes, warm wood deck, and lush greenery made the whole rooftop feel like the perfect escape. It was exactly what we needed to fully relax and recharge.

Breakfast at Ananda Boutique Hotel was such a treat—fresh fruit, squeezed juices, and Colombian coffee as vibrant as the flowers around the hotel. The whole spread was the perfect start to the day! Trust me, it’s worth getting up early for breakfast. By 1 pm, the heat hits hard, so starting your day early is definitely the move.

My perfect routine was starting with a leisurely breakfast, heading out in the morning (because it’s already 80°F by 9 am!), and coming back around 1 pm to escape the heat. The main-level pool was an absolute gem—cozy loungers, a bar just steps away, and plenty of shade. We spent our afternoons sipping on pitchers of sangria loaded with fresh fruit, and let me tell you, the piña coladas were unforgettable! We had lunch here a few times too, and I still remember how good it was...fresh, flavourful, and exactly what you want by the pool. I absolutely loved my stay here and can’t wait to come back.

Bringing Cartagena Home

Cartagena’s vibrant streets and old world colonial architecture definitely left it's mark on my design style. The intricate wooden doors with their personalized door knockers, and all the little details just radiated warmth and charm. Now, I can’t help but want to bring that vibe into my own decor. Think tropical prints, rattan accents, and a pop of bold colour to capture that "Cartagena" feel at home.

Food & Drink

Cartagena is a paradise for food lovers.

Here are some of my absolute favourites, where we discovered culinary magic...

CARMEN

Carmen was one of my favorite spots in Cartagena. The chef’s tasting menu was absolutely on point! We went with the drink pairing, and both the cocktails and wine complemented the flavors perfectly. Moshi, another great spot, was located in the same building. They had courtyard seating where you could dine outdoors, surrounded by lush greenery. Tables and chairs were beautifully arranged among the plants, creating a peaceful, magical atmosphere—like dining in a hidden garden.

ALMA

Located in the heart of an iconic hotel in Cartagena’s Walled City, Alma is so much more than a restaurant—it’s a place where history and elegance truly come to life. The hotel, with its beautifully preserved colonial architecture, feels like stepping back in time. High arched doorways, rustic stone walls, and intricate wooden details pull you into a different era, where craftsmanship and charm are everything. Alma’s vibe reflects Cartagena’s rich past but with a modern twist that makes it feel fresh and inviting.

And the food? Just as unforgettable. Every dish feels like it’s crafted to match the beauty of the setting, blending local flavours with a sophisticated touch. From beautifully plated appetizers to indulgent main courses, the flavours are bold, yet balanced. Alma’s menu celebrates Colombian ingredients with a creative edge, making each bite as memorable as the ambiance. It’s the kind of place that draws you in with its elegance and keeps you captivated with every taste.

MOSHI

If you know me, you know I'm all about variety. Moshi, with its à la carte menu, is where I craft my own foodie adventure. It's like a choose-your-own-flavour story. http://moshico.com.co/

DON JUAN

For a taste of Cartagena's culinary soul, Don Juan is unbeatable. It's where local ingredients shine, and every dish feels like a warm hug from the city. Check out their menu and get ready to fall in love.

MARIA BONITA CANTINA

Located in the heart of Getsemaní, Maria Bonita Taqueria Cantina is the perfect spot for an authentic Mexican meal in Cartagena. The vibrant décor, including a gorgeous flower wall that’s basically made for Instagram photos, sets the tone. The menu is packed with delicious options—arrachera tacos and flautas de rabo enchilado are standout favourites. And of course, the drinks are just as good! There’s a great selection of tequilas and mezcal-based cocktails to choose from. Whether you’re stopping by for a casual lunch or a fun night out, Maria Bonita delivers a memorable experience in a lively, welcoming atmosphere.

SAN FELIPE DE BARAJAS FORT

We set out from the Walled City to explore San Felipe de Barajas Fort, one of the most iconic landmarks in Cartagena. Our route took us through Centenario Park and the colourful streets of Getsemaní, a neighbourhood known for its lively atmosphere and stunning street art. The streets here are truly a feast for the senses...vibrant flags and umbrellas are strung between buildings, creating a playful canopy overhead. Nearly every wall is adorned with detailed murals, each telling a story of the area's rich culture.

When we arrived at San Felipe de Barajas Fort, we were awestruck by its grandeur. Built in the 1600s, this fortress was designed with advanced European military architecture. Its massive, sloped stone walls were built to deflect cannon fire, showcasing a functional design that also has a striking sculptural quality.

Inside, we explored the network of underground tunnels. Walking through these dark, winding passages was both eerie and fascinating. Flashlights were a must as we made our way deep into the fort, eventually reaching a point where the tunnels led to water. It was surreal and slightly haunting, but incredibly cool!

On the way back, we stopped at Maria Bonita Taqueria Cantina to take a break from the heat. The margaritas were refreshing, and it was the perfect spot to recharge! The surrounding shops, filled with fashion, jewellery, and local finds, were great for a little leisurely browsing before heading back to the Walled City.

Final Thoughts on Cartagena

Cartagena stole my heart with its vibrant streets, rich history, and inspiring design. From hidden courtyards to unforgettable meals, every moment was pure magic. It's a city I can’t wait to return to and one that offers endless inspiration for both travel and design lovers.
